National Youth Leaders of  Political Parties  In Nigeria Conderms  Alleged Obstruction of Presidential Candidates of National Democratic Congress MR. Peter Obi's Humanitarian  Visit To  Benue State.

The Forum of National Youth Leaders of all Political Parties in Nigeria (FNYLPPN) condemns in the strongest terms the alleged harassment and obstruction of the Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr. Peter Gregory Obi, during his planned humanitarian visit to Benue State on September 8, 2026.
In line with verified reports and supported by video evidence, Mr. Obi and members of his delegation were blocked along Boko Road near the Air Force Base in Makurdi by persons reportedly acting under the direction of a Special Adviser to the Benue State Government. The visit was intended to commiserate with affected families and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the wake of the recent attacks in Yelwata and other communities, incidents in which over 200 lives were tragically lost.
The Organization views this action as deeply alarming and wholly unacceptable within the framework of democratic governance.
Our Position:
1. Democracy and Free Movement: Every Nigerian—without regard to political affiliation—has a constitutional entitlement to freedom of movement and to engage with fellow citizens anywhere within the country. Transforming humanitarian gestures and condolence visits into instruments of political intimidation sets a perilous precedent.
2. Security and Governance: At a time when Benue State and other regions continue to grapple with insecurity, displacement, and human suffering, leaders should be encouraged—not hindered—from drawing national attention to victims and mobilizing support.
3. Youth and the Future of Politics: As youth leaders spanning all political parties, we unequivocally reject the deployment of thuggery, roadblocks, and coercive intimidation as substitutes for legitimate political participation. Our generation must build a Nigeria where issues are addressed through debate and democratic engagement, not suppression.
We therefore call on:
1. The Benue State Government to promptly investigate the incident and ensure that all responsible persons are brought to account.
2. The Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies to remain strictly nonpartisan, protect all citizens, and guarantee the safety of political and humanitarian stakeholders in Benue State.
3. All political actors to embrace tolerance, civility, and the ethos of sportsmanship as the 2027 general elections approach.
We stand in solidarity with the people of Benue State in their grief, and with every well-meaning Nigerian who wishes to extend sympathy to victims of terrorism irrespective of political considerations. Nigeria belongs to all of us, and we must not permit partisan interests to eclipse our shared humanity.
