A renewed emphasis on sustainable energy development in Africa took centre stage at the book release and presentation event for Financing the Energy Transition in Africa: Interconnected and Mini-Grids and Sustainable Development in Nigeria, authored by Dr. Cheryl Uche Ikejiaku. The gathering aligned with Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7), which underscores the imperative of ensuring affordable and clean energy for all.
The book underscores the urgency of mobilising finance to accelerate Africa’s energy transition through interconnected infrastructure, mini-grids, and other forward-looking solutions capable of advancing sustainable development—particularly in Nigeria. It further frames the energy transition as a strategic pathway to broader economic and social progress.
Building on the central theme, a panel of experts—including Nnanna Oketa, Head of Legal at the South East Development Commission, and Alex Obiochina—stressed that effective financing alone is insufficient. They argued that governments must also craft enabling legislation and cultivate a robust regulatory framework to attract private capital, strengthen investor confidence, and ensure long-term viability in the energy sector.
Representing the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Ibrahim Kashim, Director of Legal Services, described the book as a timely and consequential call to action. He urged stakeholders to assume the role of catalysts for reform, championing initiatives that can expand energy access at scale while stimulating economic growth.
A symbolic highlight of the occasion was the ceremonial cutting of the cake, marking both the official launch of the book and the celebration of Dr. Ikejiaku’s 50th birthday.
In closing, stakeholders affirmed that delivering affordable, clean energy across Africa will demand a coordinated, collective effort—one that blends adequate financing, sound policy architecture, and sustained engagement from both the public and private sectors.
