The political terrain in Adamawa State has shifted decisively following the formal declaration of Abbas Aminu Iya’s intention to contest the 2027 governorship election—an announcement that could mark the beginning of one of the state’s most hotly contested races for its highest office.
The senator currently representing Adamawa Central in the 10th Senate, Iya obtained his governorship nomination form amid mounting excitement among supporters and keen interest from political watchers. Shortly after completing the process, he addressed journalists, articulating his driving motivation and the guiding principles of his vision for the state.
“I know what my people want—that is why I am contesting for this position,” he said. “I bring the experience and knowledge required to advance Adamawa State.”
Iya also underscored the question of zoning and equitable representation, noting that the central senatorial zone has yet to produce a governor. In his view, the 2027 election offers an opportune moment to address what he described as a long-standing imbalance.
“I am from the central zone, and we have never produced a governor. I believe this is the right time,” he stated.
While urging residents to embrace the spirit of democracy, Senator Iya called for peace and unity throughout the political process. He further expressed confidence in his party’s internal democratic procedures, particularly the direct primary system.
“I call on the people of Adamawa State to be peaceful and law-abiding. With the direct primary, I believe we will secure victory,” he added.
Bringing to the race a blend of legislative experience and grassroots development initiatives, Senator Iya has built a public profile marked by engagement at both constituency and national levels. Prior to his election to the Senate, he served as Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, a position that placed him at the heart of state-level lawmaking and policy formulation.
In the National Assembly, he presently chairs the Senate Committee on Science and Technology, where his efforts have emphasized innovation, education, and the advancement of technological capacity. Within his constituency, he is widely associated with infrastructure delivery and community-centered social interventions.
Among his notable achievements is the construction of approximately three kilometers of roads within Uba township, along with the development of a doctors’ quarters access road in Yola South. His constituency projects have also included the distribution of solar-powered streetlights across all seven local government areas in Adamawa Central—an initiative designed to strengthen security while stimulating local economic activities.
In Jimeta, he facilitated the provision of a transformer for the Abattoir (Mayanka) community to address persistent electricity challenges. In recognition of the importance of agriculture to livelihoods, he has supported farmers with the distribution of fertilizers. Additionally, security
arrangements have been reinforced through the provision of motorcycles to local vigilante groups.
On the legislative side, Iya sponsored five bills within his first year in the Senate, with proposals cutting across essential sectors including healthcare, education, and environmental management. He has also been a vocal advocate for the establishment of a National Eye Care Center in Jimeta, alongside initiatives focused on information and communications technology development and flood mitigation.
Political analysts believe that the convergence of Iya’s legislative experience, constituency outreach, and regional appeal could make him a formidable contender in the 2027 governorship contest. Nonetheless, the months ahead are expected to clarify the full spectrum of aspirants and the political forces that will ultimately shape the outcome.
As campaigning begins to take shape across Adamawa State, stakeholders will closely monitor how strategies evolve and whether appeals for fairness, development, and unity will connect with voters. For now, Senator Abbas Aminu Iya’s entry has injected new energy into the ongoing conversation about the future direction of Adamawa State.
